Congressional Cemetery, established in 1807, is one of America's oldest national cemeteries and the only cemetery in Washington D.C. designated by an act of Congress. Located along the Anacostia River, it was the first national cemetery in the United States and served as a repository for Congressional memorials. The cemetery contains the graves of Native American leaders, Civil War veterans, and many prominent figures in American political history.
