Saint Louis Cemetery
New Orleans, Louisiana ยท Established 1789
Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1, established in 1789, is the oldest surviving cemetery in New Orleans and one of the most distinctive in America. Because of the city's high water table, New Orleans developed a tradition of above-ground burial in whitewashed brick tombs. The cemetery contains the tombs of many of New Orleans' most colorful historical figures and is a beloved landmark of the French Quarter.
